Attention all basketball
players...Don't wait until it's too late to improve your game!
What if you could improve
your field goal and free throw shooting percentage so that regardless of
the situation or the level of play, you become the go-to player for every
team you suit up for?
|
|
Well, you can and "The Shooting
Coach" is the training aid that can help get you to that level of playing
status. So learn to develop your shot by turning
knowledge into wisdom with every release of the Fundamentals Basketball
Academy's patented training aid "The
Shooting Coach."
Since basketball was invented, players have
had the desire to become better at the game. Some players understand
the importance of the perimeter game and shooting the basketball and have
worked to develop their shooting capacity. These would-be shooters
work countless hours hammering fundamental principles without truly understanding
what they are executing due to limited visual feedback that is given from
a brown or orange basketball. Players focus on release, rotation,
and follow-through without truly understanding
what influence they are having on the ball. These players, through
sheer determination, lock into these principles; however, without true
knowledge and understanding of these principle fundamental components a
player's results are "hit" or "miss." At this point the only way
a player can measure his/her success is if the ball goes in the basket.
However, this form of feedback only helps a chosen few and does not provide
all shooters with the information needed to make the required adjustments
to receive the desired result of more made baskets. To provide greater
assistance to the shooter, he/she
needs a visual aid to help him/her identify what is taking place when the
ball is released. A traditional basketball does not provide such
feedback. That is why “The Shooting Coach” was invented. Invented
and developed by the Fundamentals
Basketball Academy "The Shooting Coach" is a basketball shooting training
aid with a patented shooting method designed to help a player visually
read his or her current shot release and rotation with every release of
the ball. This training aid enhances the fundamental elements of
shooting the basketball and provides an avenue for the shooter to ensure
immediate visual feedback each time the ball is released until the desired
result of more made baskets is achieved.
"THE SHOOTING COACH". . .
IT STARTS WITH FUNDAMENTALS!!!
In learning how to become a
better shooter of the basketball, it is a good idea to start with an excellent
foundation. Good shooting mechanics are a necessity for any player
that is in the process of developing his/her shooting ability. Every
player's goal should be to develop proper shooting mechanics through emphasis
on fundamentals. As consistency develops, the player can expand his/her
overall capacity to shoot the basketball by adding other components that
are desperately needed and sometimes overlooked (i.e., shooting with the
dribble, full court fast break jump shot, etc...) Our focus at the
FundamentalsBasketball
Academy is to develop players that are well rounded and have the capacity
to dictate to opponents in any given situation. We want our players
to become PURE shooters as opposed to a STREAK shooter. Pure shooters
can shoot the ball. Streak shooters are "hit" or "miss" or "on" or
"off", and our goal is to be able to consistently shoot the basketball
regardless of the situation and get the result needed: a made basket.
As a pure shooter we know that the defense will be drawn to the player's
shooting ability. This places our players in a situation to be able
to dictate to the defense. Our players can put the basketball on
the floor going to the basket and/or take one or two dribbles, right or
left, and pull up for a jump shot. As a true perimeter shooter, the
player can stay outside and shoot the basketball. As a result, the
defense will be drawn to the player's shooting ability. The player
will then be able to do a variety of other things with the ball [i.e.,
drive the ball to the basket and finish or get fouled, dribble left or
right and pull up for the shot, handle the ball on the fastbreak and pull
up for a perimeter jump shot, and move without the basketball until they
are in a position to receive the pass and pull up for a shot.] In
developing this type of shooter, "The Shooting
Coach"was developed to help arm and equip
students with a resource to assist them in their shooting development.
Please note: The information
discussed above is describing the development of a player that has the
capacity to shoot the basketball in any given situation. When we
shoot the basketball we are talking about more than just standing there
and catching the ball and shooting it in the basket. Players that
have more shooting versatility are the ones that can shoot in any given
situation. Theses types of players are rare yet valuable. Interested
in becoming one of these types of players? Then please continue to read
on . . . . . .

"THE SHOOTING COACH". . . PERFECTING YOUR
SHOT!
How "The Shooting Coach" was
developed and how it works:
Since 1996 the Fundamentals
Basketball Academy has helped thousands of individual players develop
and advance their skill level in the game of basketball. Shooting the basketball
is one of the skills that we take great pride in developing in our students.
The ability to develop a consistent and habitual shot and the capacity
to execute that shot properly and attain the desired result of making a
basket requires a clear understanding of shooting fundamentals. Players
need the proper technique for shooting the basketball and the knowledge
of what to do. They also need feedback, preferably immediate feedback,
as to whether the proper technique was employed for each shot. Players
need a reminder with each shot, until the proper technique, properly executed,
becomes a habit.
Practicing to acquire a skill is most effective
if a proper technique is properly executed numerous times. Among other
things, practice strengthens required or useful muscles. Practice also
creates control. However, practicing a wrong technique or executing a technique
improperly teaches wrong technique and is counter-productive. In fact,
bad practice may be worse than no practice. Poor practice limits an athlete’s
ability to perform or to improve in any sport or activity.
Practice should employ proper technique for
each basketball shot. There have been many "how-to" books and manuals written
about learning how to play the game of basketball and how to develop proper
shooting form and technique. However, such writings fail to include
means for ensuring that the technique employed by the athlete is proper
and consistent with the writing's instructions. In order to control
the shot with repeated, identical, correct, and habitual positioning and
movement, immediate feedback is needed for the athlete to be aware of whether
the ball's flight and rotation is proper. Such immediate feedback immediately
informs the player as to whether the shooting technique was properly executed.
With proper technique, properly executed, the technique becomes habit,
even reflex, resulting in the desired result of a made basket.
That's why "The Shooting Coach"
was invented...to
give players immediate and consistent feedback until they become more proficient
with their shooting fundamentals and thus achieve the desired result of
making more baskets.
What is "The Shooting Coach?
“The Shooting Coach” is a basketball shooting
training aid with a patented shooting method designed to help players accelerate
their shooting potential. Unlike a regular basketball “The Shooting
Coach” consists of different visual components designed to help a player
visually read his/her current shot release and rotation with every release
of the ball. ["The Shooting Coach" was invented and developed by
Troy Sowders (Owner and Head Basketball Instructor of the Fundamentals
Basketball Academy in Evansville, Indiana).] The Shooting Coach consists
of:

How does it work?
When a player shoots "The Shooting Coach"
they receive immediate feedback from the basketball as to what kind of
release and rotation they had on that particular shot and what effect it
had on the basketball. That feedback proves to be valuable as that
player strives to develop the proper shooter's release and rotation.
A brown or orange regulation basketball will not provide a shooter with
the information needed to make the necessary adjustments to develop a shooter's
touch on the basketball (See "The Shooting
Coach" vs. Regular Basketball below).
When "The Shooting Coach" is shot and feedback from the ball is obtained,
the player can make the necessary adjustments to his/her hand position,
release, and/or follow-through to achieve the correct release and rotation
on the basketball. Once a player achieves a consistent release and
rotation on a basketball and repeats this method for a period of time,
he or she will form a new habit. These corrections lead to better
fundamental shooting form which in turn leads to better shooting thus resulting
in the desired result of greater accuracy and more
made baskets. This process requires time and many adjustments, but
the results that stem from the player's work will be well worth the time
invested. |

"The Shooting Coach" vs.
Regular Basketball
A picture is always worth a thousand words and
this picture clearly shows the ability of a player to read the release
and flight of a "Shooting Coach" basketball over the release and flight
of a regular basketball. Just from looking at the picture it is easy
to see that the thirty plus regular basketballs in flight do not provide
the shooter with the ability to read his/her current release and rotation
flight pattern. So as a player works to develop greater shooting
release, rotation, and accuracy with a regular basketball he/she is limited
because no shooter feedback is provided. However, "The Shooting Coach"
is easy to read and with consistent application it will help the player
develop consistent shooting release and rotation by providing instant feedback.
After consistent use it will yield the desired result of more made baskets.
So don't wait.... |
How do you use "The Shooting
Coach?
A shooter uses "The Shooting Coach" from the free
throw line to develop the fundamental elements of a proper shot.
The primary fundamental elements
that are developed by "The Shooting Coach" are release,
rotation, and the measurement of rotation in a set arc pattern.
The ball provides each shooter with the proper
hand placement (i.e., pads and finger tips
only on the ball, shooting hand index finger and middle finger split the
valve stem in a "V" pattern, the off-hand fingers point to the ceiling,
and the off-hand and shooting hand thumbs form a "T" pattern) needed
to execute a proper shot. Additionally, "The Shooting Coach" has
identifying
marks that provide the shooter with release
and rotation feedback information relevant to that particular shot.
With that information in hand, the shooter can make the fundamental adjustments
necessary to develop the proper release and rotation with every release
of the basketball that is shot.
"The Shooting Coach" has a vertical
line centered down the middle of the ball.
This line is comprised of two elements:
1)WHITE
VERTICAL LINE: The white vertical
line will help the shooter determine and develop the release element of
their shot. With a correct shooting release, the WHITE VERTICAL LINE
will remain VERTICAL. Players who use off hand, off thumb, or turn
their shooting hand will immediately see the basketball release pattern
change (i.e., vertical line will wobble or ball will rotate sideways).
This change will not result in the desired release of a VERTICAL
LINE as the ball rotates to the basket.
2)RED
AND YELLOW ROTATION RECTANGLES:The center
vertical line is also comprised of yellow
and red rectangular segments. These
segments help players determine the proper
rotation on a basketball when shot.
If a player has proper rotation on
a basketball, the yellow and red rectangular
segments will blend and turn orange indicating
to the shooter proper rotation on the basketball. Players who do
not get enough rotation on the basketball will cause a knuckle ball effect
(i.e.,
shooter will not see colors blend to orange and will still see distinct
yellow and red rectangular segments).
The last defining element of the "Shooting
Coach" is the white, pink, yellow, and orange
quad panel segments.
These panels allow a player to measure how
many times the ball rotates in a set arc pattern.
All players set their hands in the proper hand position setting on the
white segment known as the starting position (New Version: Right
Hand - White Segment Starting Point and Left Hand - Pink Segment Start
Point) . When the shooter shoots "The Shooting Coach" from the free
throw line the ball rotates on its way to the basket. A good shooter
typically gets two (the ball rotates twice with TSC going into the basket
on the second rotation with the white quad panel facing the shooter)
to two and a quarter
(the ball rotates two and quarter times with TSC
going into the basket on the quarter rotation with the pink quad panel
facing the shooter) rotations on the basketball when the player shoots
from the free throw line.
[DATA OBTAINED FROM TESTING: On
average, a good shooter will cause the ball to rotate one quarter turn
about every two feet.]
Shooters will work on developing their shot
(release, rotation, and arc) from the free throw line. This set position
eliminates all other shooting variables (i.e., body movement, dribbling,
etc...) and allows the shooter to focus on developing strong release and
rotation shooting skills. "The Shooting Coach" will help all players,
young and old, develop stronger shooting fundamentals on their way to becoming
true pure shooters. Once a player develops sound shooting fundamentals
using "The Shooting Coach" from the free throw line, they can then begin
to utilize the online developmental drills page to advance their shooting
potential.
NOTE: We recommend that once you have
placed your hands in the correct hand position spots, focus on the target
while you shoot. This eliminates following the ball with your eyes
when you shoot and allows you to stay focused on the target. To accomplish
this have a parent, coach, or friend watch your shot from behind and the
side and give you the feedback information. We highly recommend the
use of video tape when using "The Shooting Coach." Video tape (i.e.,
tape from the half court line and the side line) will allow you to watch
for yourself what kind of release and rotation your shot has so you can
identify and correct your current shot on your way to forming a better
one.
TESTIMONIALS
"'The Shooting Coach' has helped my shooting
in many ways. First off, when I first started playing, I had no spin
(rotation) on my shot. But after using 'The Shooting Coach,' I now
have normal spin (rotation). Secondly, I always had a 'chicken wing,'
as my trainer would say, when I would shoot; and when he tried to explain
it to me, I just couldn't see the problem. Well he let me use 'The
Shooting Coach' during our training session and then I understood why my
'chicken wing' was throwing off my shot."

REVIEW
Yes, there are competing products on the market. However, a little comparison
never hurt anyone. We have offered up our reviews on jump products for
some time. Shooting videos continue to flood the market. Everyone wants
to learn proper technique when it comes to shooting the basketball. There
are even several balls on the market that introduce proper hand placement.
So, this is not the first product of its type on the market. But, it is
definitely one of the better products of its type.
The shooting aid is a basketball that has several graphic delineations
to allow for watching the flight of the ball. This a great method to instantly
see the rotation of the ball and make the proper adjustments. The 40 minute
video, in DVD video format, is broken down into several major sections.
Here is a breakdown of the major areas of the DVD.
Introduction
to the Shooting Coach 15 min.
This area goes into great detail describing the different graphic
panels on the basketball. Individual chapters are designated for describing
the 5 different graphics.
1.White Vertical Release Stripe
2.Red/Yellow Rotation Rectangles
3.White Segment Start Point
4.White/Pink/Yellow/Orange Quad Panels
5.Hand Position/Placement
Each area of the basketball is described in detail and the purpose
behind each. The rotation rectangles
blending to "orange" are probably the best feature.
Demonstration/Use
5 min.
This area is a breakdown of variations of rotations that FBA has
determined.
1.Line Drive Bullet
2.Sidewinder
3.Knuckler
4."Wounded Duck"
5.The Seam
Keep in mind that "the Seam" is the rotation to achieve.
You
will want to use the ball in all of your shooting drills after watching
this 5 minute portion.
Advanced
Shooting Applications 5 min.
The shooting applications is a well planned section. It includes
introducing the need for the use of video for correcting bad habits. A
nice breakdown in camera placement on the court is shown. You can see the
need for a video camera at this point.
Fundamentals
of Shooting the Basketball 13 min.
A great lesson on proper free throw shooting fundamentals in 13
minutes or less. FBA has determined that there are 3 phases in gaining
proper shooting alignment. These 3 phases are displayed in this section.
This
area of the video pays for itself. A good breakdown for the
proper mechanics of the free throw.
Available
Products 2 min.
Yeah, you can visit the website to see the products as well. But,
a nice touch to display what exactly FBA offers.
I appreciate the owner of the Fundamentals Basketball Academy, Troy
Sowders, sending PowerBasketball the ball. We
have put it to use with some of our younger players and have seen good
results. The "instant feedback" is great for
younger players looking for that "instant gratification" of what is going
right or wrong. Do yourself a favor and visit
the website and order a basketball today. You might even consider purchasing
several for your team. They even offer one of those oversized "Big"
basketballs to help refine your shooting touch even more.
Please visit FBA's online drill's guide if you are looking for drills
to use with the shooting aid. You can also visit the online user's guide.
